Coffee is Political
Rama Dufatanemunda spent years training, developing and fighting for women’s rights to own land.
Several years ago, Marie-Annonciate mobilized women near the Mubuga station to challenge Burundi’s patriarchal laws - which prohibits women from owning land - and to fight for women’s rights to own land.
This beautiful Natural Red Bourbon is the product of years of hard work and advocacy for women’s rights by the women in this group.
They gained the support of the Kahawatu Foundation early on, and then support from Greenco, which manages washing stations in the Kayanza province. However, even with the support and years spent lobbying, they were not able to secure their member’s rights to own land as women.
But hard work pays off.
Several community members noticed the group’s determination to fight for their rights and an individual actually leased their land to the group. When the time finally came for the women to own and operate their land, they were well prepared.
In 2015, they spend 2 years preparing the land and working with Good Agricultural Practices. In 2017 they planted their first model farm and diversified into coffee, beans, veggies and livestock. With their hard work and applying Good Agricultural Practices, they improved coffee cultivation and boosted yields from 0.7kg to 2kg per plant!
This Natural Red Bourbon has a sweet, floral aroma. It has delicate flavors of apricot, lemon peel, and elderberry. You may notice hints of chocolate or pomegranate, too. It has a juicy body mouthfeel with a nice citric acidity, and great body.
